Öjsberget is located northeast of Malung, on the western side of Lake Öjen. The culturally and historically valuable summer pasture settlement, Vålberget, lies north of the nature reserve, and a hiking trail passes through the area. From the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the lake and the surrounding forests.
Old-Growth Forest and Mountain with Stunning Views
Öjsberget is home to high biological values, primarily found in the old-growth forest-like eastern slope and the herb-rich northern slope, where spruce trees dominate. Around Öjsberget, there are also old pines and deciduous trees of various ages and sizes, along with an abundance of dead wood, all of which contribute to a rich biodiversity. Öjsberget is classified as a \\\"southern vegetation mountain,\\\" meaning that the rocky slope retains heat, creating a local climate similar to areas further south. From the summit, visitors are treated to a beautiful view of Lake Öjen.
Rare Lichens and Rich Wildlife
Several moist areas can be found within the hilly 100–150-year-old mixed coniferous forest. Öjsberget is Sweden’s richest site for Stictis radiata (a rare crustose lichen). Other interesting species recorded in the area include Lobaria pulmonaria (lung lichen), Phlebia centrifuga (a rare corticioid fungus), and Bryoria bicolor (a type of horsehair lichen). Bird species such as the Northern Hawk-Owl, Ural Owl, and Three-toed Woodpecker have also been observed in the area.
Hike to the Summit
A forest road leads to Vålberget’s summer pasture settlement—take the entrance from Arvselen. From the settlement, a hiking trail passes through the nature reserve. Öjsberget offers a spectacular viewpoint. A trail leads to a rock ledge, where visitors will find a guestbook to sign.
